Why isn’t window glass accepted in my recycling program?

Warning message

Some recycling and solid waste facilities are temporarily closed, operating with reduced hours, or accepting a limited range of materials – please call ahead. Consider delaying your visit to facilities unless absolutely necessary by storing dry recyclables and other items at home temporarily.

Plate glass, including glass from windows, picture frames, furniture, and glassware, is not included in the curbside recycling programs in BC. This is because these types of glass have a different chemical composition and manufacturing process than container glass. Only container glass, such as food jars and bottles, can be recycled at participating Recycle BC depots and some municipal curbside collection programs. Keep window glass, drinking glasses, light bulbs, teacups and mirrors out of the recycling bin. Whole pieces of plate glass can possibly be reused and broken plate glass may be recycled at some facilities. Please call the RCBC Recycling Hotline for more information.
