Can my empty paint cans go into my garbage can or blue box?

Warning message

Some recycling and solid waste facilities are temporarily closed, operating with reduced hours, or accepting a limited range of materials – please call ahead. Consider delaying your visit to facilities unless absolutely necessary by storing dry recyclables and other items at home temporarily.

No. Paint cans are not accepted through municipal recycling programs. In most areas, they are also banned from the garbage can. All paint cans, empty or full, should be taken to a Product Care Recycling depot for recycling. Please ensure that each can is residential-grade, not leaking, and has its original label prior to drop off.  These cans will be accepted free of charge.

To find out where the paint depot is in your community, call the RCBC Recycling Hotline or visit the Product Care website.
