What happens to the fluorescent bulbs I drop off at LightRecycle depots?

Warning message

Some recycling and solid waste facilities are temporarily closed, operating with reduced hours, or accepting a limited range of materials – please call ahead. Consider delaying your visit to facilities unless absolutely necessary by storing dry recyclables and other items at home temporarily.

Fluorescent lights collected at Product Care Recycling depots are shipped to domestic processors. The processor crushes the light bulbs under controlled conditions and the components are separated. The glass and metal are recycled and the mercury-phosphor material is sent for retorting (a heating process that results in usable mercury). The destination for plastics and ceramics from CFL ballasts may vary by processor.
